'Fight for the Well' - AAR

I achieved a first for myself in the wargaming hobby this past week.  I gamed with my figures and terrain in another location other then my house.  Until then I was the only one who had gamed with my figures and terrain and only ever in my own home.  However, I got the opportunity to pack up my dark age figures and terrain and my smaller gaming mat and take it over to a friends house.  Needless to say I was quite excited.  So excited in fact I forgot extra batteries for my camera and ended up with no pictures of the last couple of turns of the game.

This was a spur of the moment thing so I did not have time to prepare a scenario.  We ended up just making one up when I got there.  I used a watered down home brew of the Age of Blood 2nd Edition rules.  I split my available figures evenly, we designated one figure each as a leader, threw down the terrain and got to playing.

The basic concept for the scenario is two dark age forces fighting over the only well for miles.  While this might seem unnecessary given the close proximity of the river however, come winter the river freezes solid and it is much easier and safer to draw water from the well.  What follows is the brief game that ensued.

We each deployed on either side of the board coming down the road towards the well in the center of the battlefield.

The two forces closing in on each other.  My forces coming from the bottom of the picture after crossing the bridge.

Both sides begin to form a battle-line, while the lone archers on each side take unsuccessful shots at one another.

The battle lines clash with both sides taking casualties.

My line is pushed back and begins to be flanked on the left.

One of my brave (or foolish) men breaks through to attack the enemy archer who is protected by the enemy leader.

My men take heavy casualties but still mange to inflict a few on the enemy force.

At this point the batteries ran out on my camera and for the life of us my friend and I could not find another set.  The next few turns saw us trade casualties man for man until both sides were so battered that they both withdrew to lick their wounds leaving the battle a stalemate.

For being thrown together by me at the last minute the game was quick but alot of fun.  It was a great feeling being able to share all my figures and terrain with a friend outside of my house.   I look forward to doing it again but until then I will be getting back to my on going campaign.

Commands & Colors Ancients - Published Review

(warning what follows is shameless self promotion)  :-P

A couple weeks ago I made a post about a new war boardgame I had just purchase and was assembling, Commands & Colors Ancients.  I eventually got all the stickers put on the blocks and finally got a chance to play a few games.  I really enjoyed the game and thought about writing a review for it.

As some of you know when I am not playing warboard games and painting miniatures I also like to play computer wargames.  Well I recently joined a new website, Grogheads, which is dedicated to wargamers.  It is geared towards all sorts of wargamers, including those who play computer, board, and miniature wargames.  They are just getting the website off the ground and are looking for new members for their forums.  Its a great site and I highly recommend that everyone go over and check it out.  If you do check them out and decide to stay just let them know that 'The Command Tent' sent you, that should get you in the door.  :)

All that to say, I wrote a review of the game and submitted it to Grogheads' editor, it was accepted and is now featured on their front page!  If you would like to give it a read you can check it out at the following link.

Command & Colors Ancients Review

Seeing how this is the first piece of writing that I've done that has been published, if any of you go and check it out I would be very interested in your thoughts.  Thanks!

Portable Battlefield from the 1930s

Check out the short video clip from what appears to be a longer film in the link below.  I am tempted to purchase the whole movie...

"Model Battlefield 1936"

How awesome would it be to game like that.  Especially the firing of the artillery.  Now I just need to get a group of friends together to move my units around with magnets under the gaming cloth.  I had never seen or heard of anything like this before.  Have any of my readers from the UK ever seen or heard of this in the flesh?

Thanks to Everyone!

No hobby update today as with the nicer weather I have been do more things outside in addition to my already busy work schedule.  However, there are a couple of things I wanted to bring to my readers attention.

First of all I want to give a heart felt thank you to all my followers and readers.  This past week I hit 100 followers, a number I neither deserve nor thought I could attain.  With that milestone reached, I just want to express how thankful I am for all of you who read and more importantly all of you who comment on my posts.  It is a big encouragement and gives me a wonderful sense of community.

Along with 100 followers I also noticed that I missed my blog's anniversary.  March 9th was the 2nd anniversary of The Command Tent blog.  I can't believe that it has already been 2 years of blogging.  When I first started I was not sure if I could keep up with the blog after the initial excitement wore off.  Now even though I only post about once a week I have been able to maintain some what regular content.  Again this is largely due to the encouragement and inspiration of my fellow bloggers.  So thanks again and I look forward to what this next year of blogging will bring.
