World Building Part II - A Map!

As I said in my introductory post on my world build, my reader feedback is very important to me.  To that end the majority of the comments after my last post were to start with a map and work from there.  I really love maps and thought this was great advice.

This first rough draft map is one I sketched up with pencil and scan into my computer.  It came out a bit light but I think conveys the idea I am looking for.  I have some names picked out for the different areas but I am going to save that for another post.  Right now I am looking for feedback on the map itself.  I welcome any constructive criticism.  This is definitely a newbie effort on my part and I am sure I made some simple mistakes.  I know one area I could use advice in is scaling everything thing appropriately on the map.  But any advice in general would be great as well.  I enjoyed the process and look forward to refining my efforts in subsequent drafts.  Also I found a great deal on Campaign Cartographer 3 so I will be messing around with that program and hopefully post the fruits of my labor, if I can figure the program out.

Without further to do I give you rough draft number 1 of my map.  (Click for a bigger version.)

  1. Looks good, i can't see anything that needs changing. What will the climate be like in this part of your world?

  6. Looking good. I like starting with a map also. It focuses your mind and can develop as you play. Good start.

  7. The map looks good. As far as scale goes you have to give yourself an idea of how big the population is. Are the individual dots cities, towns or villages? Basically villages will not be more than a days travel from another population center, they need to be able to trade easily. I don't know too much about CC except you can make good maps with it and should be able to import your scan to start.

  8. Nice map -- I think the terrain distribution and location look very natural. For scaling Sean's ideas sound pretty good to me.
