Game Night!

The other night my wife and I were invited over to friends for dinner and to hang out. Our wives ended up watching some chick flick while my friend and I went through all the board games he owns and the ones I brought over to find one to occupy our evening. We ended up deciding on my copy of Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! - Russia 1941-42. It was great since I have only played it once since buying it last year. Technically I was still learning the game while teaching it to my friend. However, we had blast and ended up playing the first two scenarios that come with the game. Here is a picture of some of the action.

I have really enjoyed this game so far even if I have not experience all the parts of the game. One reason it has been fun is the easy to understand manual. Its illustrated with great examples and explanations of why certain rules are the way they are. After a brief introduction the manual is broken into several sections. At the end of the first couple of sections it tells you to stop and play specific scenario. In the section you just read you were given what you needed to complete that scenario. It really helps ease you into the game so you are not overwhelmed all at once with all the rules. It also helps reinforce the rules by actually playing them as you learn them. I have played about half way through the manual and am looking forward to finishing it so I can experience the full game.

Favorite websites

When it comes to history and wargaming I have several sites and groups I am apart of. My favorite site is Armchair General Their forum is one of the few that I frequent and indulges both my history and wargaming interests. I also subscribe to their magazine which is excellent for the amateur military historian. Armchair General's associated sites, Historynet and The Wargamer are also excellent sites. Another favorite is Gamesquad However, lately I have not been as active around the forums as I once was when their "Campaign Series" section was active, but still a good site for wargaming news and discussion. I am also a member of several different Yahoo groups that focus on miniature gaming and building terrain for wargaming. All of these are excellent resources for my beginning foray into the wargaming hobby as well as my interest in military history in general.

An introduction of sorts

Since this is the very beginnings of my blog I thought I would introduce more about what I hope this blog will be. I'm a recent college grad with a degree in history and a life long love for military history. Because of this most of my hobbies in some fashion relate to military history. Lately I have begun to explore the world of wargaming with miniatures. I am still feeling my way through the masses of possibilities but am taking samplings of different areas. My current collection includes

-Two boxes 1/72 ACW figures half way completed

-One 6mm Combat Command box from GHQ miniatures, 3/4 completed (also two bags full of their terrain maker hexes, with about 10 actually complete)

-Two boxes of 1/72 WWII figures halfway completed

-Two 1/72 German anti-tanks guns and crew completed

-One platoon of mid-war US Flames of War figures, 1/4 of the way completed

-various terrain projects in different stages of completion (these include a batch of scratch made trees, hills, two buildings and and experiment with a home made terrain mat)

As you can see I'm really just beginning in this hobby and have yet to really settle on a scale and era to game... not that I am limited to just one. I keep telling myself I will finish one of my projects before buying something new, but we all know how well that turns out.
I hope to sometime soon begin posting pictures of my stuff and some of the works in progress.
